Mohs Surgery
Reconstruction

Nonmelanoma skin cancers, which include basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma, affect about one in every five people, according to statistics from the Skin Cancer Foundation. Because sun exposure is the most common culprit with these skin cancers, you will frequently find them on visible areas of the skin like the face and neck. While surgical removal is an effective treatment option, patients are often concerned about the cosmetic results. Enter Mohs surgery, a proven technique for skin cancer removal that offers high success rates and a superior aesthetic outcome.

Mohs surgery is a precise excision method that removes all of the cancer cells from the area while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. The procedure eliminates the cancerous tissue in very thin layers, inspecting each layer underneath a microscope to ensure that all of the cancer is eradicated. Once a tissue layer shows only healthy cells, the procedure is complete and the area is sutured closed. Dr. Saad is trained in Mohs surgery, and you can be confident that his knowledge and experience will ensure that you achieve the best cosmetic results while eliminating the cancer.

Are You a Candidate?

Mohs surgery is an appropriate option for nearly any nonmelanoma skin cancer. There are numerous advantages to this procedure over other types of treatment like cryotherapy and standard surgical excision. This surgery makes a recurrence of cancer less likely, while ensuring the best possible cosmetic result. In most cases, Dr. Saad can do the full removal process in a single treatment session.

Mohs surgery is particularly appropriate for the following situations:

  • Cancer is in an area where cosmetic results are a significant concern
  • Cancerous area is exceptionally large or lacks well-defined borders
  • Recurrence is a concern or cancer has already recurred at least once
  • Scar tissue complicates the excision process

Dr. Saad can help you determine whether Mohs surgery is the right treatment option for you.

About Your Procedure

Mohs surgery is an outpatient procedure performed with local anesthetic. Once the area is numb, Dr. Saad will meticulously remove the cancerous area in thin layers, checking each layer under a microscope before removing any more. If cancer cells are found in the sample, an additional portion of tissue will be removed. Dr. Saad will repeat this process until the extracted cells are completely cancer-free.

Mohs surgery can take many hours to complete in some cases, depending on the number of layers that are removed. The process is not uncomfortable, and you will be able to read, answer emails or rest between excisions. Upon the completion of your procedure, you can resume regular activities right away. However, some patients opt to spend their treatment day relaxing at home before heading back to their daily schedule.

The Recovery Process

Dr. Saad will send you home with instructions on how to care for your incision after Mohs surgery to make sure that your healing process is smooth and complication-free. The better your incision heals, the less conspicuous your post-operative scarring will be. You will also have a prescription for oral pain medication to keep you comfortable after your surgery. Any side effects, such as bleeding, bruising or swelling, should subside within a matter of days.

A diagnosis of skin cancer can be alarming, but the good news is that you have many effective options at your disposal to eradicate cancer and leave you with the best possible cosmetic outcome. To learn more about Mohs surgery, contact Dr. Saad’s office today.
