Gynecomastia

While female patients are usually the ones undergoing breast procedures, there are some men in need of breast surgery as well. These men have a common condition known as gynecomastia, or enlarged male breasts. While gynecomastia is not usually a serious medical problem, it can take a significant psychological toll. Men with enlarged breasts often suffer from self-confidence issues and lack of self-esteem that impacts every aspect of their lives.

If you are one of the many men struggling with gynecomastia, you know all too well how this condition affects your ability to nurture personal relationships or even enjoy a day at the beach. Fortunately, there is a surgical procedure that reverses the symptoms of gynecomastia with permanent results in most cases. Dr. Saad performs male breast reduction surgery to give gynecomastia sufferers a flatter, more masculine chest contour.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a result of overdevelopment of one or both breasts in boys and men. Many of these cases are due to hormonal fluctuations during puberty, and the condition resolves on its own over time. Other causes of gynecomastia might include:

  • Some prescription medications
  • Anabolic steroids
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Some types of cancer
  • Use of illegal street drugs
  • Injury or trauma to the chest
  • Obesity

Pinpointing the cause of gynecomastia is an important step, because eliminating the cause when appropriate may resolve the condition without the need for surgery. For example, if a medication is the culprit, stopping the medication may effectively treat the problem. A distinction should be made as to whether the excess tissue is glandular or fatty as well, because treatment methods may be different for the two.

Are You a Candidate?

If gynecomastia has not resolved on its own and it cannot be treated through non-surgical methods, a plastic surgeon may perform breast reduction surgery to create a more pleasing chest contour. Dr. Saad performs this procedure on adult male patients after determining that surgery is the best course of action. His goal is to make you feel comfortable about your condition and your treatment, and to produce results that are natural and restore your self-confidence.

Before Gynecomastia Surgery

Your initial consultation with Dr. Saad is a key meeting where you will get to share your concerns in a comfortable and caring environment. He will make a careful assessment of your current health and possible medical conditions to ensure that there is not an underlying problem that could be contributing to your breast growth. If he recommends surgery, he will explain the procedure to you in detail, so you know what to expect. You will also be able to ask any questions you might have so you can prepare for your surgery with confidence.

Gynecomastia Surgical Options

There are three different ways Dr. Saad might perform male breast reduction:

Liposuction

When the enlarged breasts are primarily due to fatty tissue, liposuction may be all that’s needed to produce the contour you want. This procedure involves inserting a small tube directly into the breast tissue, which loosens the unwanted fat cells and gently suctions them away. Dr. Saad offers a variety of liposuction techniques that allow him to tailor your sculpting to your precise needs and body proportions. The final result is quite natural and long-lasting, and leaves little or no visible scarring behind.

Surgical Excision

When glandular tissue must be removed, the reduction technique of choice is usually surgical excision. During this procedure, Dr. Saad makes incisions either around the areola or in the natural folds of skin on the underside of the breast. The right incision for you will depend in large part on the amount of tissue and skin that will need to be removed. No matter which incision Dr. Saad uses, he will take great care to ensure that visible scarring after your procedure will be minimal.

Combination Procedure

Some men might see the best results with a combination of liposuction and surgical excision. In this case, Dr. Saad may begin with the surgical removal of tissue and skin, using the liposuction option during the procedure to remove unwanted fat pockets and further sculpt the chest contour. The same incisions are used for both procedures, so there is no concern over additional scarring with this technique.

About Your Surgery

You may undergo your breast reduction surgery under general anesthesia, or local anesthesia with sedation, a choice that you can discuss with Dr. Saad before your procedure. The surgery typically takes an hour or two to complete, depending on the amount of correction that will be done. After your surgery you will be moved to our recovery area, where our attentive staff will keep watch to make sure you wake up from the anesthesia safely. You will be released to go home a short time later, spending less than a full day in our office in most cases.

The Recovery Process

There is usually some swelling and discomfort after breast reduction surgery, which can be managed with oral medication and a compression garment. Men can return to work within a week or two, though it may be a bit longer before you feel ready to go bare-chested at the pool or beach, since the incisions may take a few months to heal fully. It is also important to protect those incisions from UV rays, as sun exposure can complicate the healing process.

Gynecomastia can be a psychologically damaging condition that impacts your self-confidence and your personal relationships. Male breast reduction surgery, tailored to your precise needs, can be a way to restore your masculine profile and your self-esteem.
