Otoplasty

The ears are not typically the first feature you think of when considering a cosmetic treatment – unless they affect the overall appearance of the face in some way. Perhaps they are disproportionately large or protrude from the sides of the head in a conspicuous fashion. There can also be noticeable asymmetries between the two ears themselves. These issues may be noticed early in childhood, raising concerns by the parents that their child might be teased as a result of their appearance. Adults can also be self-conscious about their ears, wearing hairstyles or hats in an effort to hide them.

Dr. Saad is a board-certified plastic surgeon that performs otoplasty procedures to bring the ears into balance and harmony with the rest of the facial features. He offers this procedure to children and adults alike, as ear surgery is one of the few plastic surgeries that is appropriate for patients of all ages. With extensive experience in all types of facial enhancements, Dr. Saad has the knowledge, expertise and attention to artistic detail that guarantees the best possible results for his patients.

Are You a Candidate?

Otoplasty is a relatively straightforward procedure that is appropriate for children as young as five, as long as the ears have fully matured. It is important for children undergoing this procedure to be able to follow instructions and be comfortable with the idea of surgery. Adults seeking otoplasty should be in good health with realistic expectations of what otoplasty can do for them.

Otoplasty may correct any of the following imperfections:

  • Ears that are disproportionately large compared to the rest of the facial features
  • Ears that stick out from the sides of the head
  • Ears that are asymmetrical in terms of size, shape or position
  • Ears that are pointed or fold over on top
  • Previous ear surgery that did not produce the desired results

Dr. Saad will evaluate your individual situation, including your precise concerns and desired results to determine whether otoplasty is the right procedure for you.

Before Otoplasty

The initial consultation is an important meeting, particularly if your child is the one that will be undergoing the procedure. You want to make sure your child is comfortable with Dr. Saad, and understands what to expect from the surgery. If possible, both parents should also attend the consultation so they can help their child prepare for the procedure and for a safe and healthy recovery afterward. Both the parents and the child will have the opportunity to bring up concerns and ask questions so that everyone feels comfortable with what lies ahead.

About Your Surgery

Otoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis, often using local anesthesia if performed on an adult patient. Dr. Saad may suggest general anesthesia for a younger patient to ensure comfort throughout the process. Incisions for ear surgery are usually made behind the ear, so that Dr. Saad can remove excess cartilage and suture the ears into a more aesthetically pleasing position. The surgery often takes just about an hour to complete, and after a short time in recovery, you will be able to go home.

The Recovery Process

The ears will be wrapped in a special dressing to keep them in their new position while they heal. Once the dressing is removed, a headband will be worn at night for another week or two. Patients are often pleasantly surprised at how little discomfort they experience after otoplasty, and adults are usually ready to return to work within a week. Children usually need two weeks of recovery before they can resume normal activities. The results of otoplasty are permanent.

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your ears or worried about your child getting teased about their ears once they start school, otoplasty may be a good option. Contact Dr. Saad’s office today to schedule your personal consultation.
