Neck Lift

You might think of your face as the primary target for anti-aging treatments, but time can also take a significant toll on the neck. Loss of collagen leads to skin looseness that causes sagging and creasing around the neck, resulting in horizontal banding and a “turkey neck” appearance. You can also end up with small pockets of fat under the chin that serve to exacerbate the aged look. Before you turn to turtlenecks to hide your aging neck, consider a neck lift for a long-term reversal to some of these unattractive changes.

Dr. Saad frequently performs neck lifts, either alone or in tandem with a facelift, to turn back those telltale signs of aging and refresh your appearance. With a keen understanding of the anatomy of the neck and expertise in facial rejuvenation, Dr. Saad is qualified to handle your procedure safely, producing beautiful, natural and long-lasting results. In addition to the surgical neck lift, he offers non-surgical solutions for patients with early signs of aging that are not yet ready for surgery.

Are You a Candidate?

Candidates for a neck lift will have advanced aging symptoms that will not respond to non-surgical treatment, or want a long-lasting treatment for moderate aging signs. Concerns addressed by a surgical neck lift might include:

  • Excess fat under the jawline that gives the appearance of a double chin
  • The formation of a turkey wattle on the front of the neck under the chin
  • Horizontal banding around the neck
  • Isolated areas of fat deposits interfering with your neck contour
  • Sagging skin creating jowls along your jawline

In addition to combining the neck lift with a facelift, Dr. Saad may recommend a liposuction technique during the neck lift to smooth the contour and create a slimmer transition from the jawline to the décolleté.

Before Your Neck Lift

Before you get your surgery on the calendar, you will have a personal consultation with Dr. Saad so he can evaluate your precise concerns and determine which procedure will best meet your needs. A full medical history is necessary at this appointment as well, to ensure you are a good candidate for surgery. Bring questions with you, because Dr. Saad will take all the time necessary to make sure you are comfortable with the surgery you choose. You will also receive instructions on how to prepare for your neck lift and your recovery process.

Options to complement a neck lift:

While the neck lift procedure is relatively straightforward, Dr. Saad does have some options he might employ to tailor this surgery to your precise needs and desired results. Those variables include:

Liposuction

Dr. Saad may add liposuction to your neck lift to achieve a smoother result. Liposuction offers the ability to remove isolated areas of fat without disrupting surrounding skin and tissue. With multiple liposuction techniques at his disposal, Dr. Saad has the equipment and expertise to ensure the best outcome from your surgery.

Kybella®

Kybella is a prescription medication that dissolves submental fat underneath the chin. This injectable treatment might be recommended in addition to or in place of a surgical neck lift. The active ingredient in the formulation is deoxycholic acid, a substance found in the body that is responsible for assisting in the absorption of fat. Dr. Saad was one of the first in his area to offer Kybella to his patients, and has performed dozens of Kybella treatments since.

Botox®

Another injectable treatment that can rejuvenate the neck area by diminishing the appearance of horizontal banding is Botox. This medication relaxes muscles that lead to the formation of some types of wrinkles. This procedure might be a good option if your skin is still relatively firm, but you are bothered by neck creasing.

About Your Surgery

A neck lift is typically done using general anesthesia, although local anesthesia with sedation may be appropriate for some patients. Incisions are made around the earlobe, in the natural creases of the skin to minimize visible scarring after surgery. An incision underneath the chin may also be used if necessary, also taking care to reduce the possibility of visible scars afterward.

Dr. Saad will remove loose skin and fat, while tightening up neck muscles if necessary, to produce the most natural results. He will also use liposuction to remove fat if appropriate, which involves the insertion of a narrow cannula to suction away unwanted fat cells. Laser or ultrasound energy will be utilized during liposuction to remove fat more efficiently while minimizing trauma to the surrounding area.

The Recovery Process

Dr. Saad will send you home the same day as your surgery with a neck support garment that will help to minimize swelling. Minor bruising and swelling are common after a neck lift, and usually resolve within 2-3 weeks. Most patients return to work and other activities after 7-10 days, although strenuous exercise may be restricted for another two weeks to give your neck ample time to heal fully.

The results of a neck lift will be completely apparent once bruising and swelling subsides, and should be very long-lasting. Over time, signs of aging may creep in once again, and you may need touch-up treatments to maintain your youthful appearance. You can prolong the effects of your surgery by using sun protection and high-quality skincare products on your face and neck.

A neck lift offers a plethora of benefits that should last for many years. To learn more about this procedure, contact Dr. Saad’s office today.
