Chin Augmentation

When it comes to facial enhancement, your chin may not be the first feature you consider, but correction of the chin can have a profound impact on the rest of your appearance. A recessed chin creates a facial profile that is disproportionate, resulting in a weak jawline, an overly prominent nose or other imbalances. By creating additional definition in the bottom portion of the face, we can produce a contour that is in harmony with the rest of the face.

Chin augmentation, also known as mentoplasty, is a way to surgically correct the chin shape and create a more pleasing aesthetic result. With extensive experience in facial enhancements, Dr. Saad is qualified to handle your chin augmentation procedure. He offers a variety of options in mentoplasty to provide his patients with customizable solutions that will produce the best outcome for their unique facial structures and feature proportions.

Are You a Candidate?

Dr. Saad may recommend chin augmentation for you if you have any of the following cosmetic issues:

  • A recessed chin that weakens your jawline
  • A smaller chin that makes your nose or other features more prominent
  • Lack of definition in the lower face

You may be surprised if you come in to inquire about nose reshaping surgery and Dr. Saad recommends chin augmentation instead of or in addition to rhinoplasty. The nose and chin are the features that set off the entire contour of the lower face, and when they are out of balance, the whole face may look out of proportion. Correcting both features may be necessary to produce the best results in your facial enhancement.

Chin Augmentation Options

There are different ways Dr. Saad might perform your chin augmentation:

Synthetic Implants

Synthetic implants are available for chin augmentation, and come in a range of sizes and shapes to fit every facial profile. These devices are placed behind the chin muscles to create size and definition. Chin implants can last for many years, and some patients enjoy their new facial profile permanently if they never experience problems with their implant. The incision for the implant procedure is made inside the mouth to eliminate visible scarring after your surgery.

Sliding Genioplasty

Some patients may be better candidates for a procedure known as sliding genioplasty, which repositions the jawbone for a more attractive facial contour. This procedure offers some benefits over implants, including the elimination of potential infection or complications caused by the synthetic device. During this procedure, Dr. Saad cuts the bone, moves it to the desired position, and then secures it using a small titanium plate. Incisions for this procedure can also be inside the mouth, so there are no visible scars afterward.

Fat Transfer

Patients in need of a smaller amount of correction may benefit from fat transfer. This procedure removes unwanted fat cells from one area of the body and injects them into the chin to create a more prominent feature. The fat produces a natural, permanent result.

About Your Surgery

No matter which type of chin augmentation you undergo, you will likely be able to have your surgery on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia with sedation. The procedure takes less than two hours to complete in most cases. Some patients may require a small incision under the chin in addition to the perioral incisions, but Dr. Saad will take care to minimize the appearance of the incision, so scarring is minimal.

The Recovery Process

You will probably be advised to adhere to a liquid diet for the first few days after surgery to avoid undue strain on the chin and lower jaw. Swelling can be managed with ice packs, and pain is kept in check with oral medication for 2-3 days in most cases. You will be able to return to most of your regular activities within two weeks.

A weak chin is a significant problem that can throw the entire appearance of the face out of balance. Contact Dr. Saad’s office today to find out if chin augmentation is the right choice for you.
