Tummy Tuck

There may be a number of reasons why you are considering a tummy tuck. Perhaps your stomach didn’t bounce back the way you were hoping after pregnancy, or age has resulted in an extra “pooch” you can’t seem to get rid of with any amount of diet and exercise. Maybe you have lost a significant amount of weight and the skin around your middle has not conformed to your new body contour.

No matter what your reason for desiring a tummy tuck, Dr. Saad has a variety of customizable options to help you reach your aesthetic goals through abdominoplasty. This procedure tightens up the abdominal wall and removes loose, excess skin to create a firmer, smoother midsection. Liposuction is often done at the same time as a tummy tuck to enhance your results and further sculpt a more defined abdominal wall. Dr. Saad will discuss your specific concerns and desired results to ensure that you achieve the best possible outcome from your procedure.

Are You a Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck if you are in generally good health, do not smoke, and are prepared to commit to the recovery process. This procedure will address the following concerns:

  • Separation of the abdominal muscles as a result of pregnancy or weight gain
  • Areas of fat around the middle that will not respond to exercise or dieting efforts
  • Loose, hanging skin after pregnancy or massive weight loss
  • The appearance of stretch marks between the navel and the pubic line

A tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure, and is generally recommended for patients that have achieved a stable, healthy weight. It is best to wait to schedule this surgery until after you are finished having children, since pregnancy can affect the results of the procedure.

Before Your Tummy Tuck

Dr. Saad will spend time with you at your initial consultation to discuss your specific concerns in detail to determine whether a tummy tuck is the right choice for you. He will also assemble a complete medical history to make sure there are no risks to your health associated with this procedure. If you smoke, he will advise you to quit a number of weeks prior to surgery to prevent potential complications from the nicotine.

This consultation time gives you the chance to talk with Dr. Saad about your expectations for surgery, and express any concerns you might have. This is an opportunity to ask any questions about the procedure, so that you have an educated understanding of what your surgical experience and recovery process will be like. You should leave your initial consultation feeling comfortable and confident in your choice of this procedure and how it will address your specific body contouring goals.

Tummy Tuck Options

Dr. Saad offers a number of options in tummy tuck techniques so that he can tailor your procedure to the level of correction you might require. Those options include:

Traditional (Full) Tummy Tuck

This is the most common type of abdominoplasty procedure, involving an incision that runs just beneath the panty line from hipbone to hipbone. Through the extended incision, Dr. Saad is able to tighten up the abdominal muscles and remove excess skin to create a smoother midsection. Liposuction may be used during the procedure to enhance the definition and sculpting of the abdomen. The navel is usually repositioned during this procedure to create a more natural-looking result.

Mini Tummy Tuck

Also known as a limited incision tummy tuck, this procedure may be recommended for patients that only require correction below the navel, and will not produce the extensive improvement seen with a traditional procedure. The incision for a mini tummy tuck is also located beneath the panty line, but is typically much shorter than the one created for a traditional abdominoplasty. Excess skin is excised and the abdominal muscles are tightened to remove the “pooch” and create a flatter middle. The navel does not typically need to be repositioned during this procedure.

Fleur de Lis Tummy Tuck

This type of abdominoplasty is usually reserved for patients that have undergone bariatric surgery and have a significant amount of redundant skin impacting their weight loss results. The procedure combines the horizontal incision of the full tummy tuck with a perpendicular incision that runs up the center of the torso. The additional incision allows Dr. Saad to remove more excess skin to achieve horizontal tightening and a smoother overall result. Repositioning of the belly button may also be necessary to produce the most natural result.

Circumferential Tummy Tuck

This procedure, also referred to as a belt lipectomy, offers the greatest amount of correction after bariatric surgery, particularly in patients that lose 70 pounds or more, and have massive amounts of loose skin around the trunk. In addition to flattening the midsection, this surgery removes redundant skin around the hips, flanks and buttocks. As the name suggests, the incision runs completely around the middle of the body, allowing for dramatic, three-dimensional results.

About Your Surgery

Dr. Saad performs most of his tummy tuck procedures using general anesthesia, which means you are asleep for your surgery. While patients can often go home the same day as their procedure, circumferential tummy tucks usually require an overnight stay in the hospital to guarantee that the recovery process begins without complication. The surgery can take anywhere from two to six hours, depending on the amount of correction required.

The Recovery Process

It takes some time to recover from a tummy tuck. Most patients are back to regular activities within three to four weeks, with restrictions on lifting and strenuous exercise in place for up to eight weeks. Once you have fully recovered, you can expect your tummy tuck results to be long lasting as long as you maintain a healthy weight after your surgery.

A tummy tuck is an effective body contouring procedure that can help you achieve the aesthetic that you can’t attain through diet and exercise alone. To learn more about this procedure, schedule your personal consultation with Dr. Saad.
