Over time, you might begin to notice changes to your upper arm that make you self-conscious about wearing sleeveless garments or bathing suits. Skin laxity sets in, creating the loose, flabby look that is often referred to as “bat wings.” You may also notice isolated areas of fat accumulate in the underside of the upper arm, further exacerbating the aged appearance. This problem also occurs in people that have lost an extensive amount of weight quickly, leading to loose skin that fails to conform to the slimmer contour of the arm.

These upper arm changes do not typically respond well to exercise, since the changes are due more to the aging process or loss of skin elasticity, rather than lack of conditioning. Dr. Saad offers an arm lift (or brachioplasty) to his patients that are unhappy with the look of their upper arm, because this procedure offers dramatic, long-lasting results that will help you regain your self-confidence and your love of wearing sleeveless fashions once again.

Are You a Candidate?

Dr. Saad may recommend brachioplasty to you if you are experiencing any of the following concerns:

  • Skin under your arm has become loose due to age or sun damage
  • Significant weight loss has led to excessive, redundant skin
  • Your loose skin makes you self-conscious about your appearance

The best candidates for an arm lift will be in good health and are non-smokers. It is best to reach a stable weight before this surgery, since additional weight loss can impact the results of the procedure.

Arm Lift Options

Dr. Saad has the experience and expertise to tailor your arm lift to the amount of correction required as well as your aesthetic goals. Options available for an arm lift include:

Liposuction

If the primary issue involves isolated areas of fat and tissue, and skin elasticity is good in the area, liposuction alone may produce satisfactory results. This procedure involves tiny incisions that allow for the insertion of a narrow tube that removes extra fat cells and creates a smoother contour.

Limited-Incision Brachioplasty

If only a small amount of correction is required, Dr. Saad can perform the arm lift using a shorter incision, usually located around the armpit. The procedure involves less discomfort and downtime than a standard brachioplasty, but cannot address more serious fatty deposits efficiently.

Standard Brachioplasty

For a standard arm lift, the incision extends down the underside of the arm from the armpit to the elbow. Dr. Saad will take great care in minimizing post-operative scarring through the placement of the incision and meticulous suturing techniques. The procedure may be recommended if you have a larger amount of skin and tissue that needs to be removed.

Extended Brachioplasty

This procedure may be recommended by Dr. Saad if you have lost a massive amount of weight and require more correction. The incision for an extended arm lift stretches from the underside of the arm to the side of the chest wall to allow for additional skin removal and contouring.

Dr. Saad will carefully consider your precise concerns and desired results to ensure that you receive the procedure that will give you the best solution for your needs.

About Your Surgery

Dr. Saad will perform your brachioplasty using either twilight or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of correction required. Your surgery should take about two hours to complete if no other procedure is performed at the same time. You will be able to go home the same day as your surgery to recover in the comfort of familiar surroundings.

The Recovery Process

Dr. Saad will see you multiple times after your surgery to ensure your recovery is free of complications. You will most likely be able to resume most of your regular activities within about one week, although strenuous exercise and heavy lifting will be restricted for additional weeks to ensure full healing of the incision. Your incision will also fade over time and become less conspicuous.

An arm lift is an efficient way to remove excess skin from the upper arm and create a slimmer, more youthful contour. To learn more about this procedure, contact Dr. Saad’s office today to schedule your private consultation.
